About

The Sioux Falls Downtown River Greenway project added much-needed infrastructure to support entertainment, recreation, and economic development opportunities in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. The greenway improved pedestrian and bike access to the river and features a complete trail loop between Falls Park and Fawick Park. The first phase of the project created an urban riverwalk, a pedestrian bridge, and a small amphitheater. The second phase increased the number of access points to the greenway and added a new plaza with an interactive water feature. An upcoming third phase will extend the trail further along the river’s banks.

Project Details

Description

The Sioux Falls Downtown River Greenway, initially implemented in the 1970s, went through an updated master planning process to increase recreational and economic development opportunities along the Sioux River corridor. The design team worked closely with public and private stakeholders to identify issues and build consensus for a unified vision. The resulting improvements have created vital infrastructure, enhanced entertainment and recreation opportunities, and stimulated private riverfront redevelopment.

The greenway has become a vibrant, pedestrian-friendly amenity that serves both residents and visitors. The project incorporates local quartzite stone, native plants, and artwork by community artists. Educational panels along the riverwalk trail provide insights into the historical significance and environmental importance of the river. An abandoned railroad bridge on the site was replaced with a 200-foot-long pedestrian bridge that connects the East Bank shopping district to Falls Park West. The new amphitheater offers an inviting space for small events, and the plaza includes benches and an interactive water feature, creating a welcoming place for families to gather.

Project Goals

  • Add 1,550 feet of bike and pedestrian trails to increase recreational opportunities.
  • Increase entertainment options by building an amphitheater for small events that includes 14 benches with up to 192 feet of seating.
  • Replace an abandoned railroad bridge with a 200-foot-long pedestrian bridge.
  • Add landings to give river access to canoes and kayaks.
  • Build a plaza space with an interactive water feature.
  • Add a scenic overlook to provide attractive views.

Social Benefits

  • Promotes a healthy lifestyle for 59% of 60 surveyed park users and increases outdoor activity for 59%. Of 134 observed visitors, 77 were biking, 4 were running, 48 were walking, and 5 were kayaking.
  • Attracts over 25,000 visitors annually for recreation and events and hosts an average of 16 public events each month.
